Cat Breed of the Week: Maine Coon

Although named after the raccoon, contrary to popular folklore, the Maine Coon cat is not the result of a cat breeding with a raccoon; more likely is the story of a cross between an American domestic cat and a long-haired cat (possibly an Angora), brought by ship from Europe.
Equally at home with children, dogs, or older persons, the Maine Coon is an ideal pet, handily earning its status as the second most popular breed in America, as well as its fond nickname, "The Gentle Giant." Who can resist this beautiful cat?

Neurological Disorders in Cats

Cats are subject to several different kinds of neurological disorders, some with similar symptoms, and different causes, and others unique to themselves. As an example, seizures in cats can have several different causes, including brain tumors, inflammatory diseases affecting the central nervous system, or parasitic infections, such as Toxoplasmosis. As an example, my Shannon suffered seizures as a result of  FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Disease), prior to his death.Learn more about the causes, diagnosis, treatment and management of Neurological Disorders in Cats.

May Honors Tuxedo Cats

I can't believe that May is here already, and I'm looking forward to selecting all the Cat Pictures of the Week from submittals to the Tuxedo Cats Show and Tell gallery. Tuxedo cats' striking colors: all black, with a white bib and sometimes white boots, have almost become a classic among cat lovers, and "tuxies" are favored worldwide. Years ago I selected Tuxedo Cats for my Cat Pictures of the Week, because they reminded me of the elegant tuxes often worn to senior proms, (and girls sometimes wear tuxes too.) Don Pedro, pictured here, looks splendid with his white bib accenting his glossy black coat.
